Three mandatory holidays apply across all states: Republic Day (January 26), Independence Day (August 15), and Gandhi Jayanti (October 2). No establishment can make employees work on these days.
State Holidays
Each state declares its own gazetted holidays based on its cultural festivals and history. Maharashtra Day, Karnataka Rajyotsava and Pongal are each declared by one state and do not apply elsewhere.
Restricted Holidays
A separate list of optional holidays that employees can choose from, typically two per year. These accommodate the religious and cultural diversity within each state without making every festival a mandatory holiday for everyone.
Managing holidays across multiple states?
Engage HRMS lets you assign state-specific holiday calendars to employees based on their work location, so payroll and leave are always calculated correctly, no matter where your team is based.
