Understanding Meghalaya's Holiday Calendar in 2026

Meghalaya declares 23 general holidays for 2026 under Notification No. GAA.78/2025/23 dated 21 October 2025, plus a Special Holiday on 22 June for seven of the state's districts, and a 9-day restricted list from which each employee may choose any 2. Deputy Commissioners may separately declare up to 3 local holidays for their own district.

The shape of the list is unlike anything in mainland India. Christmas runs as a four-day block from December 24 through 27, and five separate days commemorate individual Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo figures rather than pan-Indian religious festivals. Diwali gets a single day and Durga Puja two.

For payroll, commercial establishments fall under the Meghalaya Shops and Establishments Act, 1974. Shillong's employer base is weighted toward government, education, tourism, and a growing IT and BPO presence, and the December block is the point where all of them face the same scheduling problem at once.

National Holidays in Meghalaya

Republic Day on Monday, January 26, Independence Day on Saturday, August 15 and Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday on Friday, October 2 are mandatory across every establishment. Independence Day is one of six gazetted dates that fall on a weekend in Meghalaya this year, three of them clustered in December.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's Birthday on April 14 is a restricted holiday in Meghalaya rather than a general one, unlike most of the country, where it is a full closure. An employee who wants it must spend one of their two restricted days on it.

Meghalaya-Specific Holidays

Christmas is the centre of the Meghalaya calendar and runs four consecutive general holidays, Thursday December 24 through Sunday December 27. Combined with the U SoSo Tham anniversary on December 18 and U Kiang Nongbah on December 30, the state carries six general holidays in December. Offices in Shillong effectively close from Christmas Eve to the new year.

Beh Deinkhlam on Thursday, July 9 is the principal Jaintia festival, observed at Tuber and Jowai as a rite to drive out plague and secure the harvest. It is a full general holiday and has no equivalent anywhere else in India.

Wangala on Friday, November 13 is the Garo hundred-drums harvest festival, held in the Garo Hills and marking the end of the agricultural year. Seng Kut Snem on Monday, November 23 marks the founding of the Seng Khasi movement in 1899 and the survival of the Khasi indigenous faith.

Rev. Thomas Jones Day on Monday, June 22 is declared as a Special Holiday rather than a general one, and it applies only to East Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, and Ri Bhoi districts. It honours the Welsh missionary who gave Khasi its Roman script. Establishments in the Garo Hills are not covered by it.

Three commemorations mark anti-colonial resistance: U Tirot Sing on Friday July 17, Pa-Togan Nengminja Sangma on Saturday December 12, and U Kiang Nongbah on Wednesday December 30, covering the Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia resistance leaders respectively.

Durga Puja appears as Maha Navami and Dussehra on Monday October 19 and Maha Dashami on Tuesday October 20. This is a day earlier than the Assam and West Bengal reckoning, which runs the block through October 21, so a shared Northeast calendar will misalign Meghalaya against its neighbours by one day.

Deputy Commissioners may declare a maximum of 3 local holidays for their own district, drawn from the 53rd Garo Labour Corps Day, Shad Suk Mynsiem, Unitarian Anniversary Day, Shad Nongkrem, or any other festival of local significance. East Khasi Hills is the exception: its local holidays are declared by the State Government in GAD(A) rather than by the Deputy Commissioner.

Restricted Holidays in Meghalaya

Meghalaya's restricted list for 2026 contains 9 entries and each employee may take any 2 of them: Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's Birthday on April 14, Assamese New Year on April 15, May Day and Buddha Purnima on May 1, Muharram on June 26, Id-e-Milad on August 26, the Tithi of Sri Sri Sankar Dev on September 12, Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14, All Soul's Day on November 2, and Guru Nanak's Birthday on November 24.

The list is short because the general list already carries the Christian, Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo observances that the local workforce keeps. What remains optional is largely the pan-India calendar plus the Assamese observances brought in by staff from across the border.

Two of the nine fall on weekends in 2026, including the Tithi of Sri Sri Sankar Dev on a Saturday, which narrows the practical value of the two-day quota. Employees observing Chhath, Ram Navami, or Mahavir Jayanti have no optional-holiday route at all in Meghalaya and will need earned leave.

The December block is the defining planning constraint. Six general holidays between December 12 and December 30, with Christmas running four consecutive days, means the month cannot carry normal capacity. Year-end statutory filings and any customer commitment landing in the last two weeks of December need to be moved forward rather than staffed through.

Do not build the Meghalaya calendar from an aggregator. The commercial sites flatten the general list, the Special Holiday, and the restricted list into one table, which promotes Ambedkar's Birthday, Ganesh Chaturthi, and Guru Nanak's Birthday into full closures they are not, and presents Rev. Thomas Jones Day as statewide when it covers seven of twelve districts.

The Garo Hills and the Khasi and Jaintia Hills do not share the same calendar in practice. Wangala matters most in Tura; Beh Deinkhlam and Seng Kut Snem matter most in Jowai and Shillong. On top of that, the three-day local holiday allowance is set per district and East Khasi Hills is decided by the State Government rather than its Deputy Commissioner, so district-level configuration is not optional.
