Understanding Odisha's Holiday Calendar in 2026

Odisha declares 29 general holidays for 2026 alongside 9 optional holidays, notified by the General Administration and Public Grievance Department. The calendar is organised around the Jagannath tradition and the Odia agricultural year rather than the pan-India festival list, and several of its largest days have no counterpart in any other state.

The most striking feature is what is absent. Diwali does not appear on the 2026 general list at all, since it falls on Sunday November 8, and neither does Chhath, Raksha Bandhan, Guru Nanak Jayanti, or Bhai Duj. An employer importing a Kolkata or Delhi calendar will show a series of closures Odisha does not declare while missing Raja Sankranti, Nuakhai, Rath Yatra, and Utkal Divas.

For payroll, commercial establishments fall under the Odisha Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1956. The employer base spans government and education in Bhubaneswar, steel and aluminium in Angul, Jharsuguda and Rourkela, and the port and industrial belt around Paradip, all of which run national delivery schedules against a distinctly local calendar.

The national days sit at Monday, January 26, Saturday, August 15 and Friday, October 2. Only four of Odisha's 29 gazetted dates fall on a weekend in 2026, and Independence Day is one of the four.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti on Tuesday, April 14 shares its date with Maha Visuva Sankranti, the Odia new year, and the two are declared as a single day. Utkal Divas on Wednesday, April 1 marks Odisha's formation as a separate province in 1936 and is unique to the state.

Rath Yatra on Thursday, July 16 is the largest observance of the year: the Jagannath chariot festival at Puri, which draws crowds from across the country and effectively halts normal activity in the coastal districts. Bahuda Yatra, the return procession on Friday July 24, is on the optional list rather than the general one, which is a distinction employers near Puri should not assume away.

Nuakhai on Tuesday, September 15 is the western Odisha harvest festival and carries a second declared day on Wednesday September 16. It matters most in Sambalpur, Bargarh, Balangir, and the Kalahandi belt, where observance is close to total, and rather less in coastal Odisha, though both days are declared statewide.

Raja Sankranti on Monday, June 15 marks the onset of the monsoon and the earth's fertility, and is one of the most widely observed festivals in the state. Sabitri Amabasya on Saturday May 16, Jhulana Purnima on Thursday August 27, and Rahas Purnima on Tuesday November 24 complete the set of Odia observances with no equivalent elsewhere.

Durga Puja runs three general holidays: Mahasaptami on Saturday October 17, Mahanavami on Monday October 19, and Vijaya Dasami on Tuesday October 20. Mahasaptami falling on a Saturday means the block costs two working days rather than three, and note that Mahashtami on October 18 is not declared because it falls on a Sunday.

Dola Purnima on Tuesday March 3 is declared alongside Holi on Wednesday March 4, giving two consecutive days where most states declare one. Shree Rama Navami is on Friday March 27, a day later than the March 26 used across most of North India.

Restricted Holidays in Odisha

06 January 2026Guru Gobind Singh's Birthday
17 March 2026Shab-e-Qadr
04 April 2026Easter Saturday
22 May 2026Birthday of Raja Ram Mohan Roy
24 July 2026Bahuda Yatra
20 August 2026Foundation Day of Brahmo Samaj
18 November 2026Anla Navami
01 December 2026Prathamastami
24 December 2026Christmas Eve

Odisha's optional list runs to 9 days: Guru Gobind Singh's Birthday on January 6, Shab-e-Qadr on March 17, Easter Saturday on April 4, the birthday of Raja Ram Mohan Roy on May 22, Bahuda Yatra on July 24, the Foundation Day of Brahmo Samaj on August 20, Anla Navami on November 18, Prathamastami on December 1, and Christmas Eve on December 24.

The list is short because the general list already carries the observances the local workforce keeps. What remains optional is a mix of Sikh, Muslim, Christian, and Brahmo occasions with a smaller local following, plus two Odia observances, Bahuda Yatra and Prathamastami, that sit just below the threshold for general declaration.

Bahuda Yatra is the return leg of Rath Yatra, and observance around Puri is far higher than its optional status implies. Establishments in the coastal districts should plan for reduced attendance on July 24 regardless of how the day is classified.

HR & Payroll Guidance for Odisha, 2026

September is the constrained month. Janmastami, Ganesh Puja, and the two Nuakhai days give four general holidays, three of them in the same week. July carries Rath Yatra and, in practice, Bahuda Yatra. October's Durga Puja block takes two more working days.

The absence of Diwali from the 2026 general list is the thing most likely to surprise. It falls on a Sunday and Odisha declares no substitute, so a shared calendar that assumes a Diwali closure will be wrong. The same applies to Chhath, Raksha Bandhan, Bhai Duj, and Guru Nanak Jayanti, none of which Odisha declares in any year.

Nuakhai observance is strongly regional. Western Odisha treats it as the year's most important festival while coastal Odisha does not, yet both days are declared statewide. Attendance modelling for a Sambalpur or Bargarh site differs materially from one in Bhubaneswar even though the calendar is identical.

Engage HRMS carries Odisha as its own location calendar rather than an eastern-region variant, so Rath Yatra, Nuakhai, Raja Sankranti, and Utkal Divas resolve correctly and the absent pan-India festivals do not get filled in from a shared template.

Frequently Asked Questions: Odisha Holidays 2026

Odisha declares 29 general holidays for 2026 plus 9 optional holidays, notified by the General Administration and Public Grievance Department.
No. Diwali falls on Sunday November 8, 2026 and does not appear on Odisha's general holiday list, with no substitute day declared. A calendar shared with another state will wrongly show a closure.
Rath Yatra falls on Thursday, July 16, 2026 and is the largest observance of the year. Bahuda Yatra, the return procession on Friday July 24, is on the optional list rather than the general one, though observance around Puri is high regardless.
Nuakhai falls on Tuesday September 15, 2026, with a second declared day on Wednesday September 16. It is the western Odisha harvest festival and matters most in Sambalpur, Bargarh, Balangir, and Kalahandi, though both days are declared statewide.
Three general holidays: Mahasaptami on Saturday October 17, Mahanavami on Monday October 19, and Vijaya Dasami on Tuesday October 20. Mahashtami on October 18 is not declared because it falls on a Sunday.
Utkal Divas on Wednesday, April 1, 2026 marks Odisha's formation as a separate province in 1936. It is a general holiday and unique to the state.
Chhath, Raksha Bandhan, Bhai Duj, and Guru Nanak Jayanti do not appear on either list, and Diwali is absent in 2026 because it falls on a Sunday. Employees observing these will need earned leave.
The General Administration and Public Grievance Department issues the annual notification. The bank list comes separately, under the Negotiable Instruments Act, and Muslim festival dates depend on moon sighting, so confirm Id-ul-Fitr, Id-ul-Zuha, Muharram, and the Prophet's birthday against the current notification.
