Understanding Mizoram's Holiday Calendar in 2026
Mizoram declares 28 public holidays for 2026 under Office Memorandum No. F. 23012/36/2025-ESTT-GAD dated 29 September 2025, alongside a 34-day restricted list from which an employee may avail any 2 with prior written permission. All government offices are additionally closed on every Saturday and Sunday.
The calendar brackets the year with Christian and civic observances. January opens with New Year's Day, a New Year Celebration on January 2, and Missionary Day on January 11; December closes with Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, a Christmas Celebration on December 26, and New Year's Eve. Between them sit the state's own institutional days: Chapchar Kut, State Day, YMA Day, Remna Ni, and MHIP Day.
For payroll, commercial establishments fall under the Mizoram Shops and Establishments Act. Aizawl's formal employer base is weighted toward government, education, trade, and a small services sector, and the December block is where all of them lose capacity at once.
National Holidays in Mizoram
Mizoram's memorandum carries the three national days unchanged: Republic Day on Monday, January 26, Independence Day on Saturday, August 15 and Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday on Friday, October 2. Independence Day falls on a Saturday, which is already a closed day for government offices under the same memorandum.
Mizoram does not declare Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14. That date carries Vaisakhi on the restricted list instead, so it is an ordinary working day unless an employee spends one of their two restricted days on it.
Mizoram-Specific Holidays
Chapchar Kut on Friday, March 13 is Mizoram's principal spring festival, marking the completion of jhum clearing, and is the largest cultural observance of the year. Missionary Day on Sunday, January 11 commemorates the arrival of the first Christian missionaries in 1894 and falls on a Sunday in 2026.
Four institutional days are declared that exist nowhere else. State Day on Friday February 20 marks Mizoram's statehood in 1987, the same date as Arunachal Pradesh. YMA Day on Monday June 15 honours the Young Mizo Association, MHIP Day on Monday July 6 the Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl women's association, and Remna Ni on Tuesday June 30 is Peace Day, marking the 1986 Mizoram Accord that ended two decades of insurgency.
The Christmas block runs Christmas Eve on Thursday December 24, Christmas Day on Friday December 25, and a Christmas Celebration on Saturday December 26, with New Year's Eve on Thursday December 31 also declared. A further Christmas Festival on December 28 sits on the restricted list, so an employee can extend the block using one of their two optional days.
Unlike Nagaland and Meghalaya, Mizoram declares the pan-India Hindu, Sikh, and Muslim festivals outright rather than demoting them: Holi, Ram Navami, Mahavir Jayanti, Buddha Purnima, both Eids, Muharram, Milad-un-Nabi, Janmashtami, Dussehra, Diwali, and Guru Nanak's Birthday are all public holidays. Only one day of Dussehra is declared, on Tuesday October 20; Saptami, Mahashtami, and a separately listed Mahanavmi are restricted.
Restricted Holidays in Mizoram
The restricted list runs to 34 days and an employee may avail any 2, applied for in writing in advance. The memorandum notes that permission is normally granted by the officer competent to grant casual leave, except where the employee's presence is needed for exigencies of Government work, so the entitlement is discretionary rather than automatic.
Because the public list already carries most of the pan-India calendar, the restricted list is mostly second-order observances: Holika Dahan and Dolyatra rather than Holi, Dussehra Saptami and Mahashtami rather than Dussehra, Naraka Chaturdasi rather than Diwali, Guru Teg Bahadur's Martyrdom Day rather than Guru Nanak's Birthday.
Nine restricted days fall on Saturdays or Sundays in 2026, and government offices are closed on both anyway, which sharply narrows the usable quota. Three more coincide with dates already declared as public holidays: Parsi New Year on August 15, Onam on August 26, and Mahanavmi on October 20. Employees will concentrate their two days on Easter Monday, Raksha Bandhan, Karwa Chauth, and the December 28 Christmas Festival.
HR & Payroll Guidance for Mizoram, 2026
December is the constrained month: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and the Christmas Celebration run consecutively from December 24, New Year's Eve is declared, and December 28 is available as a restricted day. With Saturdays and Sundays closed, the last week of December is effectively lost.
Do not build the Mizoram calendar from an aggregator. The commercial sites publish a much shorter list and misclassify the pan-India festivals as optional. Holi, Ram Navami, Mahavir Jayanti, Bakrid, Muharram, Milad-un-Nabi, and Guru Nanak's Birthday are all full public holidays here rather than restricted days.
The all-Saturdays-and-Sundays rule in the same memorandum matters as much as the holiday list. A private establishment working six days will find that its Mizoram government counterparts are unavailable on Saturdays, which affects anything requiring departmental approvals or inspections.
Engage HRMS carries Mizoram as its own location calendar with a 2-day restricted quota and the closed-Saturday rule applied, so the state's institutional days and the December block come through correctly for employees mapped to Aizawl.
