Understanding Tripura's Holiday Calendar in 2026

Tripura declares 23 public holidays for 2026 under Notification No. F.17(1)-GA(SA)/2025/830 dated 1 December 2025, issued by the General Administration (Secretariat Administration) Department. The calendar reads as two traditions running in parallel: the Bengali calendar dominates the autumn with a four-day Durga Puja block, Laxmi Puja, and Diwali, while the indigenous Tripuri, Chakma, and Mog calendar supplies Biju, Garia Puja, Kharchi Puja, and Ker Puja in spring and summer.

This makes Tripura the closest Northeast state to West Bengal in calendar shape and quite unlike its immediate neighbours. But the dates do not simply copy Bengal: Tripura observes Diwali on November 9, a day after the pan-India date, and starts Durga Puja on Saturday October 17 rather than the Sunday.

For payroll, commercial establishments fall under the Tripura Shops and Establishments Act, 1970. Agartala's employer base is weighted toward government, education, trade, rubber and bamboo processing, and cross-border commerce with Bangladesh, and the October block is where all of them lose capacity at once.

National Holidays in Tripura

Tripura's notification carries the three national days unchanged: Monday, January 26, Saturday, August 15 and Friday, October 2. Independence Day is one of only three Tripura dates that fall on a weekend this year, the others being Id-ul-Fitr in March and Maha Saptami in October.

Tripura does not declare Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14, declaring the Biju and Buisu tribal new year on that date instead. Good Friday does not appear on the notification either, which distinguishes Tripura from Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Mizoram, where it is a full closure.

Tripura-Specific Holidays

Durga Puja is the largest block on the calendar, running Maha Saptami on Saturday October 17, Maha Ashtami on Monday October 19, Maha Navami on Tuesday October 20, and Vijaya Dashami on Wednesday October 21. The notification adds a footnote that Maha Saptami spans both Saturday October 17 and Sunday October 18. Laxmi Puja follows on Monday October 26.

Tripura observes Diwali on Monday, November 9, a day after the pan-India date of November 8. The notification gives it as Kartik 22 in the Bengali year and Kartika 18 in the Saka era, so this is a deliberate reckoning rather than a drafting slip. A calendar shared with West Bengal or anywhere else in India will place Diwali a day early for Tripura.

The four indigenous festivals are what separate Tripura from West Bengal. Biju, also called Buisu, on Tuesday April 14 is the tribal new year of the Chakma, Tripuri, and Mog communities. Garia Puja on Tuesday April 21 honours the Tripuri household deity. Kharchi Puja on Wednesday July 22 is the fourteen-deities festival at Old Agartala and the state's largest single-day gathering. Ker Puja on Tuesday August 4 is a rite of protection that traditionally restricts movement in the area of observance.

Poila Boishakh, the Bengali new year, falls on Wednesday April 15, the day after Biju. The two new years back to back make mid-April a two-day closure and are a good illustration of how the state's dual calendar works in practice.

Kazi Nazrul Islam's birth anniversary on Tuesday, May 26 is declared in Tripura as in West Bengal. Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur's birth anniversary on Wednesday, August 19 is unique to the state and honours the last ruling king of Tripura, who acceded to India in 1949.

Muharram on Friday June 26 and both Eids are full holidays rather than optional, reflecting a Muslim population large enough that the state treats these as closures for everyone.

Restricted Holidays in Tripura

The dates above are taken from the Government of Tripura notification issued under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, which declares public holidays for banks and financial institutions in the state and is the notification the General Administration Department publishes for the year. It carries no restricted or optional holiday schedule, so none is reproduced here.

Tripura does operate a restricted holiday facility for State Government employees in practice, but the entitlement and the eligible list are issued separately from this notification and are not reflected in the table above. Employers should treat the 23 days listed as the declared public holidays and confirm any optional-holiday entitlement against their own establishment policy.

The practical consequence is that observances absent from the list, among them Good Friday, Janmashtami, Makar Sankranti, Maha Shivratri and Guru Nanak Jayanti, should not be assumed to be closures in Tripura. Staff who keep them will need earned leave unless the establishment has its own optional-holiday policy.

October is the constrained month and it is not close. Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami, and Vijaya Dashami fall Monday to Wednesday, Laxmi Puja takes another Monday on October 26, and Gandhi Jayanti opens the month. Anything with an October deadline should be planned to finish before the Puja block rather than around it.

Of everything on this page, the Diwali date is the one most likely to be got wrong. Tripura observes it on November 9, not November 8. Because the state otherwise tracks the Bengali calendar closely, a Kolkata-derived calendar looks right until it places Diwali a day early.

The dual-calendar structure means neither a West Bengal nor a Northeast template will work unmodified. A Kolkata calendar gets most of the autumn right and misses Biju, Garia Puja, Kharchi Puja, and Ker Puja. A Guwahati or Shillong calendar gets neither.

Ker Puja on August 4 traditionally involves restrictions on movement in and out of the area of observance for the duration of the rite. Employers with field operations, logistics, or delivery commitments around Old Agartala should confirm local arrangements rather than assume normal access on the day.
