Understanding Puducherry's Holiday Calendar in 2026

Puducherry's calendar looks close to Tamil Nadu's, with Pongal, Tamil New Year, Vinayagar Chathurthi and Ayudha Pooja, but the Union Territory is geographically scattered across four non-contiguous enclaves, and that shapes the list. Puducherry and Karaikal are Tamil-speaking, Mahé is Malayalam-speaking and surrounded by Kerala, and Yanam is Telugu-speaking and surrounded by Andhra Pradesh. The declared list has to serve all four.

That is why Vishu and Onam appear alongside Pongal. They are Kerala observances included for Mahé, where a Tamil-only calendar would leave the workforce without its principal festivals. Employers with a Mahé operation should expect that region to behave like Kerala rather than like Puducherry town.

The French colonial period until 1954 left a Catholic population and institutions that the calendar reflects: the St. Theresa Festival is a declared holiday, which almost no other Indian jurisdiction grants. For payroll, establishments fall under the Puducherry Shops and Establishments Act, 1964.

National Holidays in Puducherry

14 April 2026Tamil New Year / Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti
15 August 2026Independence Day
02 October 2026Gandhi Jayanti

Republic Day on Monday, January 26, Independence Day on Saturday, August 15 and Gandhi Jayanti on Friday, October 2 are mandatory across all four enclaves. Puducherry loses only three gazetted dates to a weekend in 2026, but Independence Day is one of them, along with Liberation Day and Deepavali.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti on Tuesday, April 14 coincides with Tamil New Year in 2026. Both are declared but they fall on the same day, giving one day off rather than two. This is the same collision Tamil Nadu has, and worth stating explicitly because the two are usually listed separately.

Pongal on Thursday January 15 and Thiruvalluvar Day with Mattu Pongal on Friday January 16 mirror Tamil Nadu's harvest cluster, though Puducherry declares two days where Tamil Nadu declares three. Travel out to home districts across Tamil Nadu is heavy in this period and employees routinely extend the break.

Puducherry Liberation Day on Sunday, November 1 marks the de facto transfer from French to Indian administration in 1954. It falls on a Sunday in 2026, so no working day is gained. It shares the date with Karnataka Rajyotsava, Haryana Day, and three other state formation days.

The St. Theresa Festival on Thursday, October 15 is a Catholic observance declared as a full holiday, reflecting the institutions established during the French period. Very few Indian jurisdictions grant a Catholic feast day beyond Christmas and Good Friday; Goa's Feast of St. Francis Xavier is the closest parallel.

Ayudha Pooja and Saraswathi Pooja on Monday, October 19 followed by Vijaya Dashami on Tuesday, October 20 mirror Tamil Nadu's Dasara pair. Ayudha Pooja means tools and equipment are ceremonially left idle, so workshop and manufacturing activity genuinely stops rather than merely closing on paper.

Vishu on Wednesday, April 15 and Onam on Tuesday, August 25 are declared for the Mahé enclave. Mahé is surrounded by Kerala's Kannur district and its workforce observes the Kerala calendar in practice, so these are full closures there and minor dates in Puducherry town.

Restricted Holidays in Puducherry

28 May 2026Eid ul-Adha (second day)

Puducherry's optional list is minimal. For 2026 the second day of Eid ul-Adha on Thursday, May 28 is the principal optional date.

The brevity follows from the short gazetted list. Employees observing a festival not declared for their enclave have no optional-day mechanism and must use earned leave, which matters most in Yanam, where the Telugu-speaking workforce observes Ugadi and Sankranti and neither is on the Puducherry list.

Employers with operations in more than one enclave often publish a supplementary company holiday list covering the regional festivals of each, since the statutory list cannot serve four linguistic regions evenly.

HR & Payroll Guidance for Puducherry, 2026

The four-enclave structure is the defining Puducherry complication. Puducherry and Karaikal follow Tamil practice, Mahé follows Kerala, and Yanam follows Andhra. A single calendar applied uniformly will be wrong for at least two of the four, and the gaps are largest in Yanam, where Ugadi and Sankranti are not declared at all despite being the local workforce's principal festivals.

Puducherry's Eid ul-Fitr falls on Friday March 20, a day earlier than Tamil Nadu's March 21, following Kerala's timing rather than Tamil Nadu's. For an employer running sites in both Puducherry and Chennai, the two are legitimately a day apart.

Deepavali on Sunday November 8 gives no working day off in 2026. As in Tamil Nadu, Deepavali is the customary date for annual bonus payment, so the disbursement should clear before the weekend rather than land on the holiday.

Engage HRMS supports location-bound calendars, so a Mahé site can carry Onam and Vishu, a Yanam site can carry a supplementary Telugu festival list, and Puducherry town can run the Tamil calendar, all off a single employee database rather than four parallel ones.

Frequently Asked Questions: Puducherry Holidays 2026

Puducherry has 21 gazetted holidays in 2026 plus one optional holiday. The list is short and has to serve four non-contiguous enclaves with different languages, so it inevitably fits some regions better than others.
Those are included for the Mahé enclave, which is Malayalam-speaking and surrounded by Kerala's Kannur district. Vishu falls on Wednesday April 15 and Onam on Tuesday August 25, 2026. They are full closures in Mahé and minor dates in Puducherry town.
Yes. The St. Theresa Festival on Thursday, October 15, 2026 is a declared holiday, reflecting the Catholic institutions established during the French colonial period until 1954. Very few Indian jurisdictions grant a Catholic feast day beyond Christmas and Good Friday.
Puducherry Liberation Day falls on Sunday, November 1, 2026, marking the de facto transfer from French to Indian administration in 1954. It falls on a Sunday so no working day is gained, and shares the date with Karnataka Rajyotsava, Haryana Day, and several other state formation days.
Puducherry observes Eid ul-Fitr on Friday March 20, 2026 while Tamil Nadu observes it on Saturday March 21, following Kerala's moon-sighting timing rather than Tamil Nadu's. Both are correct for their jurisdiction, so an employer with sites in both needs to carry both dates.
Not under the Puducherry statutory list. Yanam is Telugu-speaking and surrounded by Andhra Pradesh, but Ugadi and Sankranti are not on the Puducherry notification. Employers with a Yanam operation commonly publish a supplementary company holiday list to cover them.
They overlap heavily on Pongal, Tamil New Year, Vinayagar Chathurthi, and Ayudha Pooja. The differences are that Puducherry declares two Pongal days where Tamil Nadu declares three, adds Onam, Vishu, and the St. Theresa Festival, and observes Eid ul-Fitr a day earlier.
The Puducherry Chief Secretariat issues the annual holiday notification, which applies across all four enclaves. Bank holidays come under a separate NI Act notification. Islamic dates depend on moon sighting and can shift by a day.
