Exemptions

  • Individuals with annual income up to ₹3,00,000

Bihar assesses professional tax on annual income rather than monthly salary, and collects it once a year rather than through twelve payroll deductions. Employers who spread the liability across pay cycles are doing so as a convenience, not because the Act requires it.

Frequently Asked Questions: Bihar Professional Tax

On annual income, not monthly salary. Income up to ₹3,00,000 a year is exempt; above that the tax is ₹1,000, ₹2,000 or ₹2,500 a year depending on the band.
The Act levies it annually. Many employers still spread it across payroll for cash-flow reasons, but the statutory obligation is a single annual payment.
₹2,500 a year, for annual income above ₹10,00,000, which is the ceiling Article 276 of the Constitution allows.
